Case Studies
Prudhoe Castle First School, July 2024
The client wanted to refurbish a large, disused kitchen area into a smaller food preparation area and a classroom. The original kitchen was 30 years old, with very few updates in that time. Blackwell Construction NE Ltd had a timeframe of 30 days to complete the work.
We started by stripping out the existing space, removing old appliances, floors, wall coverings, and doors, as well as taking out six walls and part of the ceiling. Once we had this empty shell, we created large partition walls with 120min fire resistance and soundproofing and installed new windows and door openings.
We also supplied and fitted new heating, ventilation, lighting, and power supplies, along with fire alarms and security systems. White cladding was installed in the kitchen, and suspended ceilings were added to the classroom.
Externally, we created new raised flowerbeds and footpaths and tarmacked the new playground. We also upgraded the building’s drainage and completed roof repairs. The entire project was completed within 29 days.
Pinnacle Housing, January 2024
Pinnacle Housing contacted us to discuss a project returning 15 vacant properties to a rentable state. These properties had stood empty for a long time and most of them showed extensive damage and poor care.
Over 15 weeks, we stripped all of these properties back and fully refurbished them with:
- Bathroom Suites
- Kitchens
- Boiler Replacement
- Plastering and Decorating
- Carpets
- Windows and Blinds
We took the utmost care and attention in refurbishing the properties and handed them back in full working order, including the same items, appliances, and furniture across all homes. The team did an amazing job of managing the project and the outcome was way above any expectations!
Community Hall Renovation in Darlington, December 2023
Following a serious incident involving a member of the public who sustained injuries due to a flooring collapse attributed to deteriorating beams, Blackwell Construction NE Ltd was approached by a local church regarding urgent renovations needed for their Community Hall in Darlington.
Upon conducting a comprehensive assessment, our team determined that the entire 400m² flooring system, including the joists, had suffered critical failures and required complete replacement.
Our team commenced the project with a meticulous demolition phase, which involved the removal of all existing flooring materials, including coverings, underlay, floorboards, joists, and bearers. During this process, we discovered that the brick piers, which had been standing for 250 years, were in particularly poor condition.
We undertook the necessary masonry work to rebuild these piers and enhance ventilation within the subfloor void. Once the structural integrity was restored, we proceeded with the reconstruction phase.
This involved the installation of 186 new floor joists and over 300 meters of joist bearers. We then laid 18mm P5 tongue and groove flooring, followed by a high-quality 6mm luxury vinyl floor covering. To ensure accessibility, we completed the project with skirting and the addition of disabled ramp access at each entry point.
Blackwell Construction NE Ltd is proud to report that this project was successfully delivered on time and within budget, making the Community Hall safe again for our local community.
